Reclining Woman (elbow)
Reclining Woman: Elbow (LH 810) has been on loan to Leeds Art Gallery from the Henry Moore Foundation since the museum opened its extension in 1982. Moore, who was born in Castleford and spent his youth in Leeds, sited the statue himself. He reportedly relished the contrast between her rounded form and the gallery’s austere limestone exterior.
Eight Nymphs
The eight nudes were commissioned as part of the creation of City Square and were meant to represent ‘Morn’ and ‘Even’ (four of each) and stood alongside the statues of four famous males. They were sculpted by Alfred Drury but in 1961 all eight were removed and put into storage, a move which prompted protest from thousands. The statues resumed their original home on July 23 1962, lowered into place on a 60ft job by a 25-ton crane, where they remain to this day.
